Access Control

Access Control Systems

An access control system enables you to fix the authority as to who can access your building. Small, medium and large organisations are realising the advantages of using electronic systems and are replacing their old key-based access control systems.

Access control systems ensure the protection of assets against theft irrespective of the size of the business. They are implemented by issuing tokens to exercise control of access through doors. All the doors that are controlled by the access control system will automatically get locked when one door is closed, preventing access to anyone who does not have a token. It is also possible to set the doors to ‘unlock’ during a chosen time period with an access control system.

The safety of the staff and their property can also be ensured with the right kind of access control systems, especially when you consider the fact that the doors are generally kept open in buildings that use the lock and key system.

Access Control Security Systems range from touchpads to key codes. Our advisors listen to what you want ensuring you receive the best access control system for your property. As Blackburn Alarms has been established for many years our staff are experts at creating quality Access Control Security Systems for large properties.

Why Access Control?

An access control system is an electronic security system that addresses the limitations of traditional locks and keys, allowing for easy and complete management of access to restricted areas of a property. Installation of an access control system not only restricts entry or exit into or from a certain area by unwanted visitors but will also protect the people already inside the area. An extended range of credentials can be programmed into the system and each event can be recorded into an event log for further evaluation.

An access control system is typically used by commercial enterprises, such as gyms that want to control access to their premises depending on time or membership levels. High users also include government buildings or any facility that requires a high level of security, laboratories being a perfect example.

Credentials for an access control system come in various forms and usually involve the following :

  • PIN numbers are popular since the vast majority of users are already familiar with such
  • Magstripes or swipe cards are regularly used by major hospitality chains and can carry additional and useful information based on particular needs
  • Biometric factors can refer to fingerprints, hand geometry, facial or retina recognition, as these are the more common human characteristics used

These credentials are processed by readers that can also be programmed to be of short range, usually up to about 100mm in distance, or long range, up to one meter. This is a fast method of entry that requires no physical contact, conforming to the Disability Discrimination Act. The latest addition to these readers, an integral part of an access control system, is the IP reader that uses software running on a Windows computer and is connected to the Ethernet network.

High-security areas that require monitoring the movement of people in both directions may use magnetic locks and strikes that actually act as an access control system in themselves. Precise access management is the determining factor for an access control system and a detailed analysis of who and how the access control system will be used is highly recommended.

Biometric Fingerprint Reading

Since the increase in technology and reduction in cost, Blackburn Alarms can now offer its customers high-definition fingerprint scanning by one of the country’s most accurate biometric fingerprint scanning companies iEvo.
Working in close partnership with Paxton Access Control, iEvo scans your finger 8 layers deep.

No other biometric fingerprint scanner reads that deep. This means that regardless of what is on your finger, oil, dust, muck, ANYTHING!

The iEvo reader will successfully scan and read your finger in all conditions. A video will soon be available to view below, so in the meantime please click the request a quote button to speak with one of our development team.

Multiple Network Access Control

Network access control systems are implemented by small, medium and large businesses when there is a need to control access to many doors in a building for safety reasons or as part of procedural requirements. Generally, network access control systems are PC based and offer central control.

Entries through doors that are included in the network access control system are allowed only on presentation of one of the following authentification depending on the type of reader that is installed:

  • A password or PIN
  • A smart card
  • User’s fingerprint that is verified by biometric measurement

In buildings that use network access control, commands stored in the PC are read or sent to each of the doors when someone presents authentication information. There are many advantages of using network access control systems. Some of the benefits are:

  • Network access control systems allow flexible control. Permission can be granted to individuals, a group of persons or a department
  • It is easy to bar a token in the case of network access control systems
  • Network access control systems can be configured to generate reports to identify who accessed the doors and when
  • It is possible to extend network access control to additional buildings through LAN or WAN
  • A network access control system can be used to control other services such as CCTV, fire doors, lifts, lighting, intruder alarms, etc
  • Access permissions can be allocated instantly for a new person, a group of persons or a department when new cards are issued in a PC-based network access control system

Summarising, the decision to install a network access control system depends on various factors such as the size of the business, the type of operation that is being carried out, the extent of control required and the type of additional services that are needed to be integrated with the system.

Paxton Access Control

Paxton Access Control provides you with the security you need by giving you flexible control over who is allowed to enter your building and when. We are proud to be Gold Approved installers of Paxton Access control systems since 2002. Paxton’s range of products includes IP and wireless controllers, server and browser-based software, keypad, proximity and speciality readers.

Paxton Access systems are designed to keep your building, staff and assets safe and secure. The size of your building or complex does not matter. From one door to hundreds of doors across multiple sites, we are equipped to provide you with the solution to your security needs.

Paxton systems come in two categories, the standalone systems and the compact system. There are two standalone systems which are suitable for both low and medium-high security applications. The compact system is really a standalone system with all the control electronics in the keypad or reader. The compact systems are easy to administer and are a cost-effective means for controlling access to a building. Compact systems can be fitted to one door or many doors in a building and more doors can be added if required.

There continues to be an increase in the demand for secure access control among large enterprises as well as small and medium-sized businesses. As gold-approved installers, we have been trained, and have the expertise in installing Paxton Access systems.

Our service spans various sectors including healthcare, the public sector and small to midsize businesses that have high regard for, and use Paxton Access Control as their security provider. Paxton Access Control has dominated the security market across Europe and Asia and is fast becoming a dominant force in the United States market.

With the Paxton Access control system, once installed, you have total control over your building as all the entrances and exits are monitored through a central point.

Single Door Access Control

Single-door access control gives power to a person to have access to a particular door in a building or a restricted area. This comes as a hi-tech security measure which is keyless and locks are not required. The keys can be stolen and misused and the whole lock mechanism has to be changed. However, this system is electronically controlled where the risk of security breach is almost nil. The access control gives access to individual doors separately and may provide layers of security.

Entering a PIN on the keypad at the door or swiping an electric token is required to gain access through the electronic doors in this type of single-door access control mechanism. Only authorised persons issued with a valid PIN or electronic token can have access to these doors.

Also if someone has previously been authorised but now has to be denied access for some reason their PIN or token can be disabled through the electronic system safely and they would not be able to cross this access control. The single door access control can be fitted to a single door or multiple doors in a building and all of these have separate access authorisation for them.

When the single door access system is put in place the door gets locked every time it is closed. Anyone without the access PIN or token cannot enter the premises through this door. The single-door access control gives full security to people and goods in a place which needs restricted access. This also gives a sense of safety to the people inside and this type of access control is most suited for places like apartment complexes, small business establishments, storage units, schools and sports clubs.

With the changing times the single door access system is also getting upgraded and better equipped to face the modern security challenges.
